Breast Reduction General Information

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Breast Reduction - The Procedure

This procedure can be performed in either Dr. LaTrenta’s office or the hospital under general anesthesia.

An anchor shaped incision is placed within the breast creases, around the areola, and vertically between the two. Working through these incisions, excess skin, fat and glandular tissues are removed from the breast. The breast and the nipple are then relocated into the anchor incision and sutures are used to connect the skin on both sides of the breast and around the nipple.

Male breast reduction is a procedure performed in the office under local intravenous sedation. If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, as it is in the young men, it needs to be excised, or cut out, with a scalpel. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction.

Breast Reduction Best Candidate

You may want to consider breast reduction surgery if you have:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame.
  • Heavy, pendulous breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward.
  • One breast that is much larger than the other.
  • Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts.
  • Skin irritation beneath your breasts.
  • Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps.
  • Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts.
  • Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the largeness of your breasts.

Candidates should be within 25 lbs of ideal body weight.

IT IS MANDATORY THAT PATIENTS BE NON-SMOKERS.

Breast Reduction Recovery Time

After breast reduction surgery, it is often possible to return to work within just a week, depending on your job.

In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities, including some form of mild exercise, after 3 weeks.

Sports activities may usually be resumed after one month.

Patients must wear a strong surgical support brassiere for 2 to 3 months after surgery.
