Face Lift General Information

Facelift surgery (technically known as rhytidectomy) is a restorative surgery used to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:

  • Sagging in the midface
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
  • Fat that needs to be added, fallen or displaced
  • Loss of muscle tone in the lower face may create jowls
  • Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a double chin

Dr. LaTrenta may recommend other rejuvenation procedures in conjunction with a facelift, such as a brow lift, to correct a sagging or deeply furrowed brow, and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes.

A facelift does not change your fundamental appearance.

Face Lift - The Procedure

As one of the leading authorities on facelift surgery, Dr. LaTrenta can perform many different types of procedures.

His textbook “Atlas of Face and Neck Surgery” has been one of the best selling textbooks on the subject and is considered a necessary primer for all surgeons learning face lift techniques.

Since this is a broad subject, the doctor will consult with you individually and explain which procedure will most benefit you.

Generally, during a face lift, an incision is made within the sideburn as well as in the natural contour of your ear. This will extend around the earlobe and behind the ear. Once the incisions are made, various degrees of undermining of the skin are performed, and the deeper layers of the face are ‘lifted’. Muscle tightening as well as liposuction of the neck and jowls may be performed, and excess skin is either removed or repositioned.

Nowadays it is rare for patients to require an incision within the hairline, so virtually all patients can wear their hair up after surgery. There is no longer any associated hair loss with this procedure.

Face Lift Best Candidate

You may wish to consider face lift surgery if you have:

  • Deep lines or folds, running from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth.
  • Jowls, or loss of a well defined jawline associated with youthfulness.
  • Wrinkles and skin folds in the cheeks and neck sagging with the “highlight” areas of the cheekbones and loss of definitions in the neck and jawline.
  • Loose skin, wrinkles, vertical “cords” in the neck, as well as excessive fatty tissue in the face and neck.
IT IS MANDATORY THAT PATIENTS BE NON-SMOKERS.

Face Lift Recovery Time

Most patients are able to resume most of their normal activities within 2 to 3 weeks, including exercise.

Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided during the early postoperative period.

You will be instructed to temporarily avoid exposure to direct sunlight and, for the long term, be conscientious about the use of sun block to protect your skin.
