Breast Augmentation General Information

Breast augmentation surgery (augmentation mammaplasty) involves using implants to create fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

Both saline and gel silicone implants are now FDA approved for breast enlargement.

Breast Augmentation - The Procedure

An incision can be made either underneath the breast within the crease or around the lower edge of the areola.

The implant is placed in a pocket either directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or underneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular).

The pectoral muscle is located between the breast tissue and the chest wall.

Breast Augmentation Best Candidate

You may wish to consider a Breast Augmentation Surgery for any of the following goals:

  • To enhance the size and shape of the breast and the contours of the chest region in women who, for personal reasons, feel their breast size is too small and/or misshapen.
  • To correct a loss of glandular breast volume after pregnancy and/or breast feeding.
  • To balance a difference in breast size and shape.
  • As a reconstructive technique for women who were born with Poland’s Syndrome.

Candidate should be within 20 lbs of ideal body weight.

IT IS MANDATORY THAT PATIENTS BE NON-SMOKERS.

Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

Although many factors are involved with determining your actual recovery time for breast augmentation, most of Dr. LaTrenta’s patients experience a post-surgical recovery period of 3 to 5 days and an additional reduced-activity period of about a week.

You will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. After breast augmentation surgery, its often possible to return to work within just a few days or a week, depending on your job.

Vigorous exercises and sports, especially those involving arm movement, may be restricted for three weeks to a month. The doctor will advise you regarding when you should resume exercise and other activity.

Over three to six months, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

I have been a patient for a few years now and have had a wonderful experience. Recently, I underwent breast augmentation and extremely happy with the results. Prior to the procedure, I had many questions and asked to come to office numerous times (many more times than average) to try on sizers and verify my size. Dr. LaTrenta and his staff were incredibly attentive and accommodating and answered every question I had. The office displayed this same level of attention on the day of surgery and after.”
